Background

Fundación Ceiba is committed to supporting local communities and advancing its mission by offering the Engineering and Entrepreneurship Scholarship Program. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to disadvantaged students, stimulate innovation, and contribute to economic growth in Puerto Rico. The scholarship will cover full tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs for students pursuing a degree in engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM).

 

Scholarship Overview


The Fundación Ceiba Engineering and Entrepreneurship Scholarship Program is designed to support Puerto Rican students who are pursuing undergraduate engineering degrees at UPRM. The scholarship will cover:

  • Full tuition and fees

  • Books and materials

  • Living expenses (e.g., food and board) for up to five years, or until graduation, whichever comes first.

The scholarship is renewable annually based on continued satisfactory academic performance and adherence to the program's terms and conditions.

Selection Criteria


The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Financial need

  • Academic excellence: The student's potential for success in engineering studies.

  • Entrepreneurial interest: The student's interest in entrepreneurship and/or social entrepreneurship.

  • Social commitment: The student's demonstrated commitment to contributing to disadvantaged communities in Puerto Rico after graduation.

Eligibility Requirements


To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Admission: Applicants must have been formally admitted to UPRM as first-year students, or for students applying for renewal, they must have successfully completed at least one year of studies at UPRM, with all required courses in the engineering curriculum and a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher.

  2. GPA Requirements:

    • Applicants for first-year scholarships must have a GPA greater than 3.0 in STEM courses completed during high school.

    • Scholarship recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in their field of study throughout the scholarship period.

  3. Schooling:

    • Applicants must have attended a public high school.

    • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

    • Applicants must be born in Puerto Rico or have parents born in Puerto Rico.

Scholarship Renewal


The scholarship is for a duration of up to five years but is renewable on an annual basis. The scholarship may be renewed each year provided the recipient:

  • Continues to meet the eligibility requirements.

  • Maintains good academic standing with the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus.

Post-Graduation Work Requirement


By accepting this scholarship, recipients agree to the following:

  • Employment Requirement: Upon graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering/Computer Science and Entrepreneurship or a related field, the scholarship recipient must work in Puerto Rico for a minimum of three (3) years.

  • Repayment Clause: If the recipient fails to meet the three-year work requirement in Puerto Rico, the scholarship amount must be repaid in full.

Supplemental Financial Aid

Scholarship recipients may apply for additional federal or state financial assistance while enrolled at UPRM. Any federal or state aid received will be deducted from the Fundación Ceiba Scholarship funds and used to support additional scholarship recipients.

Application Procedure

To apply for the Fundación Ceiba Scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Complete and submit the Ceiba Foundation Online Application.

  2. Achieve formal admission to UPRM as a first-year student or provide proof of successful completion of the first year at UPRM.

  3. Complete the standard financial aid application for UPRM. (The form is attached in PDF format.)

  4. First year students must submit the following documents:

    • A copy of your UPRM acceptance letter.

    • Your high school transcript (for first-year applicants) or UPRM first-year transcripts (for second-year applicants).

  5. Students renewing their scholarship must submit the following documents:
    • Copy of your UPRM transcript.
    • Copy of your "Carta de Aprovechamiento Academico" form generated by your discipline counselor and/or the academic dean of the school of engineering.
    • Copy of your FAFSA Application.
    • Copy of your financial expense form. You can find the form at: https://ceibafund.org/2022_CeibaFund_files/Accounting-Forms/Scholarship Expenses-Form.xlsx.

Scholarship Requirements:

  1. Service Obligation and Repayment
    Upon receiving a scholarship award from the Ceiba Foundation, each recipient shall execute a binding agreement providing that, upon graduation from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Entrepreneurship, or a related discipline, the recipient will engage in full-time employment in Puerto Rico for a minimum period of three (3) consecutive years immediately following graduation.
  2. Duration and Renewal
    The scholarship is awarded for a maximum term of five (5) academic years. Continuation beyond each academic year is contingent upon annual review and confirmation of satisfactory academic progress, as defined by UPRM policies and any additional standards established by the Foundation. The Foundation reserves sole discretion in determining eligibility for renewal.
  3. Academic and Financial Standing
    Recipients must remain in good academic and financial standing with UPRM at all times during the award period. Failure to maintain such standing may result in suspension or termination of scholarship benefits.
  4. Coordination with Other Financial Aid
    Recipients are required to apply for all available federal and state financial aid, including completion of the FAFSA. Any federal or state aid awarded shall first be applied to the recipient’s educational expenses, and the scholarship amount shall be correspondingly reduced. Funds reduced as a result of external aid shall be reallocated exclusively to support additional scholarship recipients.

Application Requirements

Applicants must provide the following documentation:

  • Official acceptance letter (“Certificado de Admisión”) from UPRM
  • Completed FAFSA application
  • Official high school transcript
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation

Second-year applicants must submit official first-year university transcripts in lieu of high school transcripts.

  2. Complete and submit UPRM’s standard financial aid application and the FAFSA.
  3. Complete and submit the Ceiba Foundation Online Application.

Scholarship Obligations:
